When it comes to creating the perfect outdoor space, laying the right foundations is everything. A customer approached us at Bluebells Groundworks with a clear vision: to build a practical and attractive patio on a set budget. Their initial plan was for a 32m² sandstone patio area, but we scaled it down to a more cost-effective yet functional 20m² design to make it work within their strict financial parameters.

We believe in doing things the right way. Whether working with porcelain or sandstone, we only lay patios on a concrete base. This ensures they stand the test of time, resisting the wear and tear of the elements.
First, we excavated the area to a depth of 150mm below the finished level. We then built a 100mm-deep shuttering frame, designed at a 1:40 gradient to allow for proper drainage. To enhance durability and manage rainwater, we included a border for a shingle French drain around the edges.

Given the relatively small size of the project, just 2m³ of concrete was needed. Instead of ordering a volumetric lorry and paying for a 3m³ minimum, we hand-mixed the concrete to save on costs. To further reduce expenses, we opted for polyfibre reinforcement in the mix rather than the traditional steel mesh.

After allowing the concrete three days to cure, the shuttering was removed, and we moved on to laying the patio slabs. A practical and stylish 600mm x 900mm sandstone slab was chosen, not only for its aesthetic appeal but also because it minimises labour time during both the laying and pointing process.

Each slab was carefully laid on a full bed of mortar, mixed at a 4:1 ratio. For the pointing, a blend of sharp sand and building sand at a 3:1 ratio was used to create neat and durable joints.

The end result is a robust and visually pleasing patio that perfectly fits the customer’s needs and budget. By using thoughtful design adjustments and cost-effective methods, we delivered a long-lasting solution without compromising on quality. This project is a testament to how great planning and solid foundations can transform a simple idea into a beautiful outdoor space.
