Working Through Challenging Groundworks in Wet Conditions

As we move into spring, ground conditions across Cranbrook, Hawkhurst and the wider Kent and East Sussex area have been heavily affected by persistent rainfall. Saturated ground creates a difficult environment for construction, and projects must often contend with challenging groundworks conditions before any real progress can be made.

The Reality of Challenging Groundworks in Wet Weather

Extended periods of rain have a direct impact on how ground behaves. Soil becomes waterlogged, unstable and far less capable of supporting weight. For groundworks projects, this introduces a number of complications that require careful handling and experience to manage effectively.

On one of our current sites in Cranbrook, these challenging groundworks conditions have been particularly evident. The ground has remained saturated for an extended period, meaning every stage of the process needs to be approached with caution and flexibility.

Adapting On Site: Working with the Conditions

Rather than forcing progress, work has focused on adapting to the conditions and managing the site responsibly. This includes:

  • Carefully assessing ground stability before bringing machinery onto site
  • Using the right equipment to minimise ground disturbance and prevent rutting
  • Phasing excavation work to avoid overexposing wet soil
  • Monitoring water levels and allowing time for natural drainage where possible

Excavation in wet conditions is rarely straightforward. Trenches can quickly take on water, requiring constant management to keep them safe and workable. In some cases, progress slows while waiting for conditions to improve, but this is often the most sensible approach to avoid longer-term issues.

Drainage also becomes a key focus during periods like this. Temporary measures may be needed to control surface water, while long-term drainage solutions must be carefully planned to ensure the site remains stable once construction continues.

Foundations, in particular, demand close attention. Pouring concrete into unsuitable ground can compromise the integrity of the build, so timing and preparation are critical. This is where experience plays a vital role in navigating challenging groundworks without cutting corners.

A Steady Approach to Progress

Despite the conditions, steady progress is still being made. By adjusting timelines, prioritising site safety and working with the environment rather than against it, the project continues to move forward in a controlled and considered way.

Looking Ahead

With drier weather hopefully on the horizon, conditions should begin to improve, allowing projects to progress more quickly. Until then, working through challenging groundworks remains a key part of ensuring sites are prepared properly and safely.

Strong, reliable builds always start from the ground up, and that starts with getting the groundwork right.
